Whether you are in PA, NJ, or Delaware, navigating the complex landscape of support for individuals with intellectual disabilities can often feel like a maze. However, this March—which is also Intellectual Disabilities Awareness Month—we are focusing on "building bridges." These bridges connect families like yours to the essential services, advocacy groups, and peer networks needed to thrive.

In the Philadelphia region and throughout the Tri-State area, empowerment comes through connection. Here are three powerful ways to strengthen your support network this month:
1. Join Local Advocacy & Networking Groups
Staying informed about state-specific regulations is crucial. Organizations like Vision for Equality in Philadelphia or The Arc of Pennsylvania provide vital updates on waivers and community resources. In New Jersey, The Boggs Center offers incredible training on person-centered planning, while KenCrest serves as a bridge for families across Delaware and PA. These groups aren't just about paperwork; they are about ensuring your voice is heard at the state level.
2. Prioritize Peer Support & Caregiver Wellness
Caregiver burnout is real, and the best remedy is often found in community. Look for groups like the PA Family Network or virtual support meetings hosted by the Philly Autism Project. These spaces allow you to connect with others who "get it"—sharing everything from the best local inclusive parks to tips on managing daily transitions. This March, keep an eye out for special events, such as the Caregiver Mini-Retreats often held in the city, which offer a chance to de-stress and recharge.
3. Revisit Person-Centered Plans
The change of seasons is a perfect natural reminder to review your loved one's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Person-Centered Plan (PCP). Does the current plan still reflect their dreams and goals for 2026? Utilizing frameworks like Charting the Life Course can help you visualize a "good life" and identify the specific supports—both paid and community-based—needed to get there.
At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we believe that with the right bridges in place, every individual can lead a fulfilling, independent life. You don’t have to walk this path alone; the Tri-State area is full of partners ready to help you cross over to new possibilities.
