Celebrating “Hats for Headway” – A Day of Awareness and Support

What is Hats for Headway Day?

Hats for Headway Day is an annual fundraising and awareness campaign held by Headway – the brain injury association, usually observed in May as part of Action for Brain Injury Week. On this day, people across the UK (and globally) don their silliest, most creative, or favorite hats to raise awareness for individuals affected by brain injuries. Whether it’s from an accident, illness, or trauma, brain injury can drastically change a person’s life—and Headway offers critical support, rehabilitation, and advocacy to help.

Why Hats?

The hat is more than just a fun accessory. For many people recovering from a brain injury, head protection becomes an essential part of life. The symbolic act of wearing a hat shows solidarity, encourages dialogue, and helps raise funds for ongoing support and services.

How You Can Celebrate Hats for Headway Day

1. Wear a Hat – Loud and Proud

From funky fedoras to cowboy hats, fascinators, or even DIY paper crowns—get creative! Wear your hat all day and tell people why it matters.

2. Post on Social Media

Share your selfie using hashtags like #HatsForHeadway and #BrainInjuryAwareness, and tag Headway or your local Headway group to spread the message.

3. Donate or Fundraise

Host a hat-themed fundraiser: a bake sale, virtual quiz night, or hat fashion show. All proceeds go to supporting individuals and families affected by brain injuries.

4. Learn and Educate

Take time to learn about the effects of brain injury and how we can create a more inclusive world for those living with them.

5. Support a Local Survivor or Caregiver

Sometimes, just checking in on someone who has survived a brain injury or their family makes a big difference.

Let’s tip our hats to awareness, support, and compassion. Because every brain injury is different—but the need for understanding is the same.
