The middle of December means holiday activity is in full swing! While this time of year brings excitement, the sudden rush of events, decorations, and changes to routine can be challenging for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Proactive preparation is key to ensuring a season of true joy, not overstimulation.
Here is a simple three-step plan to help everyone navigate the final countdown to the holidays:

Step 1: The Sensory "De-Clutter" Instead of adding every decoration all at once, focus on a gradual and mindful approach. Bright, flashing lights and loud, repeating music can quickly lead to sensory overload.
Action: Choose decorations together. Allow the individual to select one or two favorite, low-key decorations for their personal space. For communal areas, opt for warm, steady lights over flashing ones, and play music softly during a specific, scheduled time rather than all day.
Step 2: Preview the Plan Anxiety often stems from the unknown. Knowing what to expect for upcoming activities in the Philadelphia area—from a holiday luncheon to a family visit—can reduce stress dramatically.
Action: Introduce a simple, visual calendar or schedule for the next week. Use pictures or icons to represent different events (like "Visitor," "Car Ride," or "Quiet Time"). Go over this schedule each morning. For new events, use a "Social Story" to outline the sequence of events, ensuring the individual knows when the activity starts, what will happen, and, crucially, when they can expect to return to their regular routine.
Step 3: Establish the "Recharge" Zone A successful holiday season includes plenty of restorative downtime. It's vital to have a designated sanctuary when things get too loud or busy.
Action: Set up a specific, quiet corner in their room or a communal area as the "Recharge Zone." Stock it with preferred calming items: weighted blankets, favorite books, quiet fidget toys, or noise-canceling headphones. Emphasize that this is a non-negotiable safe space they can retreat to at any time.
By focusing on these three steps now, we set the stage for a calm and truly joyful experience for every individual in our care at Harrell Homes.
