Every March, we come together to observe Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM). This year’s national theme, "We’re Here: Then, Now, Always," is a powerful reminder of the enduring presence, history, and future of the disability community. It highlights that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have always been a vital part of our neighborhoods, even when past systems kept them out of sight. Our commitment to their inclusion must be just as permanent and unwavering as their presence in our lives.

For caregivers, this month is an opportunity to move beyond "awareness" and into "action." Whether you are in the heart of Philadelphia or supporting a loved one in Delaware or New Jersey, here is how you can honor this year's theme and make a lasting impact:
Share Your Story (The "Then and Now"): The 2026 campaign focuses heavily on the power of storytelling. Consider sharing a "then and now" moment on social media—perhaps a photo of a milestone reached years ago alongside a recent achievement. Highlighting how far your loved one has come helps humanize the data and shows the world the beauty of their unique journey toward independence.
Highlight the Wins (The "Now"): Use this month to celebrate the specific, everyday contributions your loved one makes to your family and community. Inclusion isn't just about being in the room; it’s about being valued for who you are. Whether it's their sense of humor, their artistic talent, or their helpful spirit, let’s make sure those qualities are front and center in our conversations this month.
Advocate for Sustainability (The "Always"): "Always" represents a future where community living is not just a "program," but a protected and funded way of life. Take a moment to notice if your favorite local spots—parks, restaurants, or shops—are truly accessible. Don't hesitate to provide friendly feedback to business owners about how they can better support visitors with different abilities, ensuring these spaces remain welcoming for years to come.
