As we celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we also look forward to World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st. This date—3/21—was specifically chosen to represent the three copies of the 21st chromosome that characterize Down syndrome. It is a global day of awareness, but the local impact in our Tri-State area is where the real magic happens.
If you are looking for a specific way to connect and celebrate between March 19th and March 25th, we highly recommend checking out the Eastern PA Down Syndrome Center (EPDSC).

They are hosting a series of events that perfectly embody this month’s spirit of community and support:
March 19th - Dual Diagnosis Support Group (Down Syndrome and Autism): This virtual meeting is a specialized resource for parents and caregivers navigating the shared experience of a "dual diagnosis." It offers a safe, judgment-free space to share resources, medical insights, and peer support from those who understand the specific complexities of managing both diagnoses simultaneously.
March 21st - World Down Syndrome Day Dance Party: To celebrate 3/21, the EPDSC is hosting a high-energy dance party! This is a fantastic way for individuals of all ages and abilities to come together, "rock their socks" (wearing bright, mismatched socks to spark conversation), and celebrate the vibrant lives and accomplishments of those with Down syndrome. It’s about joy, movement, and community visibility.
March 25th - Understanding Your Child's IEP Workshop: Looking toward the "Always" part of our theme, the center is hosting a workshop focused on the Individualized Education Program (IEP). This session provides practical tips, key insights, and advocacy strategies to help you feel informed and confident during school meetings, ensuring your loved one has the tools they need for a successful future.
Whether you attend an event in the Philadelphia region or participate virtually from NJ or DE, these resources are designed to ensure no caregiver walks this path alone.
At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we are proud to be part of your "Now" and your "Always." We are dedicated to providing a supportive environment where individuals with intellectual disabilities are empowered to lead independent, fulfilling lives.
