At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we witness the "win" of perseverance every day. This June, we are thrilled to invite our residents, families, and Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to participate in one of the most inspiring events of the year: the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games.

From June 4 – June 6, thousands of athletes from across the state will gather at Penn State University in State College, PA to compete, grow, and celebrate.
Why the Summer Games Are a "Win"
The Special Olympics isn't just a sporting event; it’s a global movement for inclusion that perfectly aligns with our mission of Presuming Competence and fostering a High-Standard of Life.
Athletic Excellence: Athletes with intellectual disabilities compete in sports like athletics, basketball, swimming, and more—proving that a diagnosis doesn’t define a person’s potential.
The Olympic Village: This isn’t just about competition; it’s about community. The village offers fun activities and social huddles where lifelong friendships are built.
Healthy Athletes Program: This vital initiative provides health screenings in a sensory-friendly environment, ensuring every athlete receives the clinical oversight they deserve.
Volunteering: Be the Scaffolding for Success
Special Olympics PA is looking for thousands of volunteers to help create a "predictable sanctuary" of support for these athletes. Roles for June 1 – June 7 include:
Sports Management: Assist with scorekeeping, timing, and field-of-play setup.
Athlete Support: Act as a "buddy" or unified partner, providing the social scaffolding needed for a successful journey.
Event Operations: Help with registration, awards, and the legendary Opening Ceremonies.
How Harrell Homes Supports Your Journey
We know that for our Philadelphia and Tri-State area families, traveling to State College requires planning. Our Community Participation Support (CPS) and Specialized Transportation services are here to help bridge the gap:
Vigilant Observation: Our DSPs are trained to manage sensory issues and overstimulation during high-energy events.
Safe Transit: We coordinate specialized travel to ensure you can reach the Games safely and comfortably.
Gaining New Skills: Whether you are an athlete or a volunteer, these games are a high-impact way to practice social navigation and self-advocacy.
