Volunteer Spotlight (Aug 10 – Aug 16): Building Community Through Social Recreation with The Arc of Delaware

When individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have opportunities to gather, explore, and connect, communities become stronger and far more vibrant. This week—August 10 through August 16—we are proud to shine our Volunteer Spotlight on the incredible helpers who dedicate their time, energy, and hearts to The Arc of Delaware's Social Recreation Program.  

The Heart of Social Recreation: Community & Connection

Social and recreational activities play a vital role in fostering friendship, communication skills, confidence, and genuine belonging. From monthly dances and seasonal gatherings to local group outings, movie nights, and social club events, these programs provide a welcome space for participants to unwind and enjoy life with their peers.  

However, these rich community experiences are only possible because of dedicated volunteers who step up behind the scenes and on the front lines.

Spotlight on Our Volunteers: What They Do

During the week of August 10 – August 16, volunteers across Delaware are jumping into action to make community outings and social club events seamless and fun.

  • Welcoming & Hospitality: Setting up event spaces, greeting participants with warm smiles, and serving refreshments.  

  • Outing Navigators: Assisting participants during community trips—whether navigating local venues, joining in games, or exploring regional attractions together.  

  • Peer Companionship: Mingling, starting conversations, hitting the dance floor, and creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and included.  

  • Mobility & Support Assistance: Helping staff ensure every participant can comfortably navigate event spaces and outings with safety and dignity.

The Impact: Why Their Time Matters

For adults with intellectual disabilities, breaking routine and engaging in active social life expands independence and reduces isolation. Volunteers don't just "help out"—they build lasting friendships and serve as allies in creating a world where every individual is fully included.
