At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, we believe that true inclusion is a two-way street. Being an active, valued member of a community isn't just about visiting local spots—it’s about having a meaningful platform to share individual brilliance, build connections, and give back to our neighbors across Philadelphia and surrounding communities.

Through our waiver-friendly Community Participation Support (CPS) and In-Community Care programs, our clients—adults with intellectual disabilities and autism—regularly step out into the city to participate in structured, high-impact volunteer opportunities. These initiatives break down societal barriers, cultivate self-advocacy, and prove every day that every individual is a Person of Worth who belongs in every space life happens.
🌟 Why Inclusive Volunteering Matters
For adults with neurodivergent needs, structured community service provides far more than a way to spend an afternoon—it is a powerful runway for lifelong growth and autonomy

Real-World Skill Building: Sorting donations, assembling care packages, or tending public gardens helps participants practice sequential task-completion, fine motor skills, and spatial awareness in predictable, process-driven environments.
Fostering Civic Pride & Belonging: Giving back builds deep, mutual connections between our clients and their Philadelphia neighbors, replacing outdated stereotypes with genuine partnership and respect.
Self-Advocacy & Empowerment: Making a tangible, positive difference in the lives of others boosts confidence, self-esteem, and personal agency.
🎒 Local Highlights: Our Clients in Action Across Philadelphia
We partner with and spotlight local non-profit organizations that offer structured, accessible, and sensory-friendly volunteer environments where our residents can thrive at their own ideal pace:
1. MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance)
In MANNA’s accessible, 10,000-square-foot kitchen, volunteer shifts offer routine-based, predictable tasks—like packing medically tailored meal trays and folding distribution boxes for individuals battling serious illnesses.
2. Caring for Friends
Assembling breakfast bags and nutritious snack packs for homebound seniors provides a gentle, highly organized setting where clients practice fine motor assembly while directly comforting isolated neighbors.
3. FDR Park Trail Beautification & Stewardship
For those who thrive outdoors, weekly park clean-ups and trail care at South Philly’s historic FDR Park offer a soothing natural sensory environment. Outdoor stewardship helps participants regulate sensory baselines while taking pride in preserving local green spaces.
4. Project C.U.R.E. (Medical Supply Sorting)
Engaging in hands-on medical supply sorting allows clients to follow clear organizational systems while making a global impact, sending critical non-liquid medical supplies to communities in need worldwide.
