Volunteer Spotlight: Building Lifelong Friendships with PALS Programs
At Harrell Assisted Living Homes, true community integration means creating spaces where neurodivergent adults are recognized as valued, active, and connected members of their communities. We believe that every individual is a Person of Worth deserving of authentic social relationships, shared experiences, and mutual growth.

This week, we are shining our volunteer spotlight on an organization dedicated to building radical inclusion through friendship: PALS Programs.
Through their immersive, peer-to-peer volunteer model, PALS proves that when you break down social boundaries, everyone thrives.
The Mission: Inclusive Adventures & Peer-to-Peer Volunteering
PALS Programs creates transformative, inclusive adventures and camp experiences for individuals with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. Rather than traditional volunteering where one person acts as a supervisor, PALS is built on a one-to-one pairing model:
1:1 Peer Partnerships: Volunteers (Peers) are paired directly with a participant with Down syndrome (Partner) of a similar age. They tackle daily adventures, explore regional activities, and live camp life side-by-side.
Inclusive Adventures & Weekend Outings: Pairs participate in organized group adventures, campus-style activities, and community trips.
Social Equality & Authentic Belonging: Outings eliminate social barriers, shifting the dynamic from support staff to genuine friendship.

Why PALS Adventures Matter
Participating in structured, peer-led adventures provides a low-pressure runway for adults with intellectual disabilities, autism, and sensory profiles:
Real-World Skill-Building: Navigating community venues and participating in recreational routines builds confidence, self-advocacy, and lifelong independence.
Mutual Growth: Volunteers and participants learn side-by-side, cultivating deep empathy and reshaping community perspectives on neurodiversity.
Sensory-Aware Social Connections: Group outings offer predictable pacing where participants engage in activities at a comfortable baseline.
